Privacy Policy: MyGymBuddy Fuel
Last updated 3 November 2026The short version
MyGymBuddy Fuel is a food log. Everything you enter is stored only on your phone. There is no Fuel account, no Fuel server, no ads and no analytics, and we never receive your data or sell it.
The app itself has no internet access: release builds are made without Android's internet permission, so Fuel cannot send anything anywhere. A few optional actions hand something to another app on your phone (Google's speech service if you choose online recognition, your web browser if you look a food up), and those are described below. So is the optional link to MyGymBuddy, which works on the phone only.
What the app stores on your phone
- Profile: date of birth, sex, height, weight, how active you are, and when your day starts. Used to work out your calorie and protein targets.
- Weigh-ins: weights you log in Fuel.
- Food log: what you said or typed, the foods and amounts read from it, their calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat, and whether you confirmed the day.
- Daily targets: each day's calorie and protein target and the trend weight it was worked out from.
- Your own foods: names and figures you add yourself, including any serving weight and a note of where the figures came from.
- Preferences: units, light or dark, how speech is recognised, and similar settings.
This data lives in the app's private storage. The food databases (from the US Department of Agriculture and Open Food Facts) are built into the app, so searching for a food never leaves the phone.
Permissions
| Permission | When it is used |
|---|---|
| Microphone | Only while you have tapped the microphone to say what you ate. See "Speech" below. |
| Camera | Only when you tap Read from a label photo. See "Label photos" below. |
| Vibration | Declared by a component the app includes. Fuel does not currently vibrate. |
Fuel does not ask for internet access, location, contacts, your photo library or your files, and it has no access to Health Connect.
Speech
- By default, Fuel asks Android to turn your voice into text on the phone, using an installed language pack, and never switches to an online service by itself: if the phone cannot recognise speech on the device, Fuel says so and you can type instead. On Android versions before 13, whether recognition stays on the device depends on the phone's speech service.
- If you choose Settings → Speech recognition → Google online, Android sends the audio to Google's speech service to be recognised. That is done by Google's own app under Google's privacy policy, not by Fuel. You can switch back at any time.
- Only the text is kept, as an entry in your food log, which you can correct or delete. Recordings are not stored.
Label photos
When you tap Read from a label photo, the camera takes one picture of a nutrition table. The text in it is read on the phone, the figures are filled in for you to check, and the photo is then deleted. No picture is kept or sent anywhere.
On-device AI (optional)
On phones that offer it, you can turn on Settings → On-device AI, which uses Android's built-in Gemini Nano to read what you said. It runs inside Android's AICore system service on the phone: your words are not sent to Google or to us. It is off unless you turn it on.
Looking a food up
When you add a food with your own figures, Look it up in the browser opens your web browser with a search for that food's name. The search is made by your browser under its own privacy terms. Fuel only passes the food's name and receives nothing back: you type the figures yourself.
Connected apps: MyGymBuddy
If you use MyGymBuddy Pro and switch on sharing in MyGymBuddy (Settings → Connected apps), Fuel can read some of your training data, on the same phone, to use alongside your food log.
- What Fuel reads: finished workouts (date, start and end time, title and your rating), the number of working sets and total volume for each, your bodyweight entries, and your MyGymBuddy units and appearance settings so the two apps look the same.
- What it can't read: heart rate, calories or anything else from Health Connect; workout notes; individual sets and exercises.
- Fuel reads directly from MyGymBuddy on your phone, and checks that it is really MyGymBuddy by its signature. Nothing goes over the internet.
- Fuel does not keep a copy of your workouts or weigh-ins. It keeps two things worked out from them: the trend weight behind each day's target (so a past day keeps the target it had), and MyGymBuddy's current look (so Fuel opens in the right colours).
- Fuel never sends anything to MyGymBuddy.
- Switch sharing off in MyGymBuddy at any time, and Fuel stops reading it from the next time it checks.
Backups
- Backup files are created only when you tap Settings → Save a backup file. You choose where the file goes (for example, your own cloud drive). What happens to it there is under your control. Restoring reads a file you pick.
- Android device backup is turned off for Fuel: your data is not included in your phone's automatic backup to your Google account or in a transfer to a new phone. Save a backup file if you want a copy.
What we don't collect
- No account, email address or sign-in.
- No advertising identifiers or advertising SDKs.
- No analytics, tracking or crash-reporting SDKs.
- No location, contacts, photo library or Health Connect access.
If the app crashes, Google Play may collect a crash report under your device's settings and Google's policies.
Deleting your data
Your data is on your phone, so you control it: delete entries or clear a whole day in the app, remove your own foods in Settings, or uninstall the app to remove everything it stored. Backup files you saved are yours to delete wherever you put them.
Children
MyGymBuddy Fuel is not directed at children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If Fuel's handling of data changes, for example if it starts reading heart rate from Health Connect, this page will be updated with a new date before that version is released, and the change will be described here.
